Steve opened up the whole show with basically a major diss on netbooks. Basically he said netbooks weren’t good at anything. They were just cheap laptops. Which is pretty much true.

Well they called it iPad. Which makes sense since it sounds like iPod, but unfortunately it does sound like the new female hygiene product from Apple. And they spent a good amount of time making damn sure people thought it was going to be called something else like iSlate. Very sneaky Apple.

So it is only a pound and a half, half and inch thick, comes with 16-64mb of flash memory and has a custom built A4 processor made for Apple at 1 Ghz.

Special Guest presenters of note where Travis Boatman from EA, Martin Nisenholtz from the New York Times, MLB.com, and some apps they showed were the EA need for speed, MLB.com’s app for watching live games, New York Times app for getting news, and an eBook reader with eBook store that actually looks like a bookshelf! Pretty darn awesome! This is an amazing way to get and read books and the immediacy of gettgin them is a great thing. I still like book stores but this is so easy and being able to change fonts and such on your books gives this application value to older gen as well. Say hello to textbooks on your ipad and stop breaking your back on your backpack students.

Now for iWork. A completely new version of Keynote, Pages, and Numbers… and they have rework the UI for over a year. Making spreadsheets fun is pretty daunting task so if they can do that then you might as well just go buy one now. Looks like making presentations and moving around Keynote is really fun too. Touch screens just make the machine more intimate. Jobs has this down pat. He makes the devices you use more human. That is what makes them different. So you can actually do work on this which touch interface. This was one of the major question marks witht eh tablet so far. Is it really practical to work on. iPad looks to be and could even replace many laptop users.

Cost: $999.00 Holy friggin crap $499.00 for the base model.

16GB is our base model. For 32GB it’s $100 more, and for $100 more than that you get $64GB. The 3G models cost another $130.

3G: ATT plans 256MB – 14.99 and an unlimited plan for 29.99 a month. NO CONTRACT!

What do you guys think? Do you like it? Will it cannabalise laptop sales? Want one?

Well today is the day that techies all over the globe clamor for the next new Apple product. I obviously think that nobody else does hype and buzz around their products like Apple does. But what is less publicized is the new OS update for the iPhone, which is probably the same OS that the Tablet will run on. I am sure we will see many live streaming webcasts of the Event in San Francisco scheduled to 10 a.m Pacific time. This will inevitably launch the new SDK as well since people will be able to develop apps for the new format of the tablet and iPhone developers will have to be able to optimize their already stellar list of apps.

Oh, so we obviously know that the OS 4.0 is coming out since we got a screenshot of it which is in the post here.According to Boy Genius Report her are the features to expect though only rumored.

There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)

“A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.

Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.

The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”

The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

I guess we will see later today.

Just kidding, this is a demo only javascript runtime that is hosted on github.com. Dubbed the Gordon project this script is for swf’s only but will load flash animations on your phone. Pretty darn cool. But, the flash is a processor intensive technology that is not optimized at all for the smallish phone processors which is why apple didn’t make it available in the first place. The chances of Adobe optimizing flash for phones is probably slim to none so we may have to wait for apple to put a faster chip in there until we see flash become standard.

To get this to this work, Flash developers will need to encapsulate the SWF into an HTML wrapper, importing the Gordon JavaScript source and then loading the swf, as shown here. So we know it is possible and that is cool. Now we wait and see what comes down the pipe.

Here is a link to some of the flash demos Tobey provides to test it on.

Already dubbed the “iSlate” by some I hesitate to think it will be called that. Too bedrock for Jobs’ liking I bet but it could very well be. Anyway, this should also result in a new OS 4 for the iPhone and a brand new SDK for the iPhone and the tablet.

Sources at Mac4Ever are hinting towards a possible release of iPhone OS 4 Beta, along with its SDK for developers. The new simulator in iPhone OS 4 SDK is said to be specially designed, most likely to make it easier for developers to optimize their current iPhone apps for larger high resolution tablet screens. This could also make way for the Next Generation iPhone 4G to finally have higher resolution display and some more new features yet to be unleashed on the ravenous Apple folk around the globe.

This just got me to thinking, when was the last time there was this much internet buzz around anything Microsoft created? Apple just keeps making stuff that people clamor over. The keep it tight to the vest and make us scour, rumor and dig for Chinese suppliers for news. That is called dedication people. Dedication to a brand.

So much data and information on one little device. Well, the iHound app will let you send your phone a message and track it to its current location so you can find it. iHound fails to let you know that if you track your phone to say, a Hells Angels clubhouse, that you are still screwed but at least you know where it is. The best thing is you don’t need a mobile me account for it. Not that having a mobile me account is all bad but adding another monthly fee to the iphone can break the bank since ATT is already bending us over.

The new version of the app is an upgrade with push notifications and alerts and works when your phone is in silent mode. It has improved configuration settings and an in app mapping feature. There is a service fee to use the service but it is nominal compared to losing your iPhone. And all without the sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach that some one other than you has your phone.

Warning: This app is not a replacement for common sense.

The newer 3.1.2 SDK is for intel based macs only. Since I have a dual 2ghz g5 with 8 GB RAM this cheeses me off as my machine is far from low performance. Luckily I have an intel mac but it still feels like betrayal.

So you have and iphone and some free time and a littel bit of coding moxie. You might think to yourself, ” I should start thinking about coding a new iphone app and take it to the next level”. Well you need to start with the first few baby steps. Follow these steps and you will be one shake closer to stardom in the iphone world. Here they are.

1.) Sign Up For a Developer Account

Click the link to get to the
Apple Developer Connection and sign up for a developer account. You can sign up for an account for free which gives you access to all of the tools and documentation. On top of that you get a built-in iPhone simulator so that you can test your applications on your local machine instead of using your iphone ( which is busy doing other things anyway). The only stinky part is when you are ready to deploy your application on an iPhone. Yup you guessed it, you must pay sign up for the iPhone Developer Program. It is 99$ for the standard and 299$ for the enterprise edition.

B.) Download the iPhone SDK

This SDK (Software Development Kit) has everything you need in it to start developing software apps for the iPhone. It includes Documentation, Sample Code, and API, and the most current version of X11. Sam old mac installation process, easy peasy. Follow the instructions and finish up. Cool, it is free and takes a bit to download but you are pretty much off and running now.
